Brazilian company, Nastek Tecnologia, is launching the Yon Bike Lamp, a bike taillight embedded with a GPS tracker. The tracker uses Telit’s GL865-Quad and connects to an app on both Android and iPhone allowing users access to riding statistics like time, distance, average speed, and calories burned. In addition to the GPS tracker, the light also features a built-in accelerometer and turns off when the user isn’t riding to conserve energy; it can also respond to an SMS message with a link to its location.
The U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey shows a 10% increase in bike commuters from 2011 to 2012 indicating a significant shift towards sustainability. The rise in bike commuters also highlights “The need for solutions in response to demand from Bicycle riders [which has motivated] Nastek to develop a product that is a security tracking device with the added value of a taillight and a fitness monitor,” according to Nastek Director of Technology, Lauro Cruz.
