If you live in Northern California take note, Google’s self-driving fleet is hitting local roads. The vehicles will venture off their test track in favor of “familiar roads” in Mountain View near the headquarters to see how the cars do in real-life situations.

The cars will use the same software tested in the original fleet, which has logged almost a million miles since the project began. A “safety driver” who can take over at any time using a removable brake pedal, accelerator pedal, and steering wheel will be on board, and the vehicles will max out at 25 mph.

Google hopes to discover more about how autonomous vehicles will interact with other vehicles and what specific challenges may arise specific to self-driving cars.
