GPS Tracking Monitors African Elephants

A PhD student at the University of British Columbia created a GPS tracking system to collect, analyze, and report information on 100 African elephants.
The tracking system uses Google Earth to provide real-time tracking of the animals’ movements and location. The information gathered from their GPS tracking collars is transmitted using satellites or a local cell phone network.
The system helps protect the endangered elephants by recognizing poaching events and keeping them out of farmers’ fields. It also helps identify and injured elephant allowing for a quick response from medical personal.
