Caltrans is reportedly spending a cool $2.5 million to give its fleet a high-tech boost. According to the Sacramento Bee, California’s transportation agency will install GPS tracking devices  on all 7,500 fleet vehicles including trucks, snow plows, and sedans.

The devices will track which employee is driving, their speed, where they are traveling, and how long the vehicle idles, among other things. In addition to the installation cost, the agency will spend $1.5 million annually on a reporting system.

Although it’s unclear how much Caltrans expects to save with the implementation of the tracking devices, fuel consumption decreased by 16 percent during a pilot program involving 200  fleet vehicles  and the agency expects to save approximately $500,000 annually by scrapping manual vehicle logs.
